British passport at Dubai airport ready for visa on arrival

British Citizen passport holders receive a free 30-day visit visa on arrival in Dubai. There's no online form, no fee, and no interview — but there are a handful of rules that catch UK travellers out every month. Here's the full 2026 picture.

The short answer

Holders of a full 'British Citizen' passport (the standard burgundy one, not British Overseas Territories or British National Overseas variants) get 30 days on arrival at no cost, extendable twice for 30 days each. Scan your passport at any Smart Gate on landing and you're through in about 45 seconds.

The passport-validity trap

The UAE requires 6 months validity from your date of entry, not from your date of return. Every month we see UK travellers refused boarding at Manchester or Heathrow because their passport expires in, say, 4 months — the check-in agent (not UAE immigration) enforces this. Renew if you're anywhere near the cutoff.

Extending beyond 30 days

Use the ICP Smart Services app (free download, works with UK phone numbers), select 'Extend visa', pay by card. Each 30-day extension costs about AED 600 and is granted instantly. Do this on day 28 to avoid the AED 50/day overstay fine. Maximum stay per entry with two extensions: 90 days.

BNO, BOTC, and dual nationals

British National (Overseas) holders — commonly Hong Kong-issued — do NOT get on-arrival entry and need an advance visa. British Overseas Territories Citizen passports (Gibraltar, Bermuda, etc.) also require advance visa unless the holder also has a British Citizen passport. Dual UK/Irish nationals should travel on whichever passport matches their return ticket to avoid airline confusion.

Has anything changed post-Brexit?

No. UAE-UK visa arrangements are bilateral and were never tied to EU rules. Prices, durations, extension rules and on-arrival access have been unchanged since 2018. The only 2025 update was the addition of biometric Smart Gates at DWC (Al Maktoum) matching those at DXB.
